I don’t know if anyone else has noticed a new makeup trend this summer, but luminous, Victoria’s Secret-esque makeup is totally in! I love me some matte, flawless finish, but this glowy, bronzed look has had me intrigued all Spring, and for the bit of Summer that we have had so far. To try and get this look, I’ve tried some of the new Spring/Summer makeup line releases as I’ve been able to get my hands on them. I am in love with the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea line – so much that I recently re-ordered both a moisturizer and foundation from that line. I also decided to explore the drugstore brands to see if there was anything that can give you an equivalent glow! So, let’s get going!
Tarte Rainforest of the Sea
This line came out earlier this Spring and I was dying to get my hands on it as soon as I started seeing Tarte’s instagram posts about it, and every beauty blogger/vlogger under the sun giving reviews on it. Well done, Tarte marketing team! In any case, I really like this foundation. It is light, has buildable coverage, lasts for 12 hours, and is full of moisture (it’s 20% water) and antioxidants. I’m not a huge fan of the eye-dropper-like applicator, but otherwise, it has been my go-to since I purchased it. You can find it here. I really like this formula’s water based coverage, as it does make your skin look very luminous! Likewise, the Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost is packed with moisture and antioxidants that promise to promote anti-aging. I really like the gel formula of this moisturizer, and this would be a lovely cooling treat if stuck in the fridge to slather on after a hot day. I would love to purchase some more of this line when I get a chance, and I hope they are a permanent addition to the Tarte line!
In my quest for luminous makeup, I thought it may be worth my while to try a drugstore brand, as I had seen a review video done by vlogger Jeffree Star praising a new foundation (I think it was Cover Girl). Since I couldn’t find that particular foundation any where local, I thought I would try another type that mentions luminosity right in its name, L’Oreal True Match Lumi foundation. I believe this can be found at most drugstores and department stores, as I don’t think that this is a particularly new line for L’Oreal. It retails for about 20 dollars.
This foundation goes on pretty well, has good coverage, and does give you a certain luminous glow. However, with my combination skin, keeping this foundation on for a full day wasn’t my favourite. I felt sort of greasy and more shiny skinned than glowing after a day at work and mid-20s temperatures.
Having said that, I applied the foundation without any primer, and just sprayed my face with some mist ‘n fix afterward. Perhaps if I had applied some powder to my areas of concern, or blotted my face during the day, I may have been more comfortable wearing the foundation all day. For me, and for me low-levels of face maintenance during the work day, this foundation didn’t cut it. If you are looking for a luminous foundation, and don’t want to spend big bucks on a Sephora formulation, this may be right up your alley!
Becca – Jaclyn Hill Highlighter
With my last Sephora haul, I also grabbed this new highlighter, designed by Jaclyn Hill who is the queen of the glowy summer skin look. This is the Champagne Pop shade, and I must say – I love this highlighter! This is a powder version, but you can find the cream version here. Highlighter is a big part of the luminous skin look, so if you love this look, or envy many of the recent makeup looks on Instagram, this may be a necessity for you. If you don’t have highlighter in your beauty budget, try a champagne shimmer eye shadow, or a multi-purpose palette that has a shimmery shade in it to get a similar look. Place the highlighter on the tip of your nose, high on your cheekbones, and on your cupid’s bow (top of your lips) to get a beautiful glow!
I hope this post helps you out when you are looking for products to get your glow on! Summer makeup is tricky, especially when you are trying to look luminous and not shiny. When looking for products to get this look, think of getting light coverage foundation (unless you can get a luminous finish with a heavier coverage), and skipping the heavy powders for shine reducing primers and finishing spray. Finish it off with a pretty highlighter, and you can give any Victoria’s Secret angel a run for her money!
